North Carolina Zoo receives the
2008 NC Sustainable Energy Champion Award

The North Carolina Zoo, located in Asheboro, was recognized for nearly 20 years as a state leader in environmental stewardship, energy efficiency, alternative fuels and renewable energy.

The North Carolina Zoo's newest attraction, the Watani Grasslands Reserve, an $8.5 million expansion of the elephant and rhinoceros exhibits and holding facilities, opened in April 2008.

The Piedmont Triad is going green!


The Piedmont Triad Research Park has announced plans to adopt Sustainable Development Guidelines based on the US Green Building Council's LEED rating systems. The guidelines will provide for future planning, construction and operation of the Research Park’s infrastructure and facilities. As an urban research park on a brownfield development site, PTRP will seek LEED ND certification for work already completed.

Downtown Greensboro Inc. has been awarded a $1,500 grant from Keep America Beautiful to expand its Cigarette Litter Prevention Program. This is the second grant awarded for this program and it will allow DGI to place additional ash receptacles within the downtown area.

BioGRID, a debris and green waste recycling firm, is expanding, adding a site in Winston-Salem. The new site will be located on four acres with the potential to grow up to 22 acres. The company takes in debris, including concrete and bricks, as well as green waste, consisting of tree branches; the ground-up remains are sold as mulch or crushed rock. The company plans to eventually expand and open multiple sites in the Triad.
