Haw River Valley officially designated
an American Viticultural Area

The Haw River Valley has been named an American Viticultural Area (AVA), one of the nation's officially designated grape growing regions.  The designation certifies that the area has features including climate, soil, topography and elevation that make it a unique grape growing region.

The new Haw River Valley AVA covers about 868 square miles (555,508 acres) and encompasses all of Alamance County as well as portions of Caswell, Chatham, Guilford, Orange and Rockingham counties.

The region, which produces European vinifera and native muscadine grapes, includes six wineries: Benjamin Vineyards & Winery, GlenMarie Vineyards & Winery, Grove Winery & Vineyards, Iron Gate Vineyards & Winery, Silk Hope Winery and Wolfe Wines. The Haw River is the Piedmont Triad Region’s third AVA; the Yadkin Valley and Swan Creek areas already hold this distinction.

High Point Market Celebrates its 100th Year

The High Point Market is the largest furnishings industry trade show in the world, comprising more than 12 million square feet of exhibition space. Each Spring and Fall, the Market attracts more than 85,000 people to High Point, including 2,000 exhibitors; attendees represent approximately 110 countries.

This Spring, the High Point Market celebrated its 100th year. Governor Beverly Perdue demonstrated her support for the High Point Market with a proclamation honoring the Market’s Centennial and also emphasized the importance of international business development. “The world has changed,” Perdue said. “We live in a global community. It is not North Carolina competing with other American states, it’s North Carolina competing with the world, and thus North Carolina must be a friend and a business partner with the world.”
